Bookstores' Night 2019

Indie Bookstores' Night for the very first time in Europe!

#BookstoreNight – 20 September 2019

Over 100 indie bookstores in no fewer than 44 Polish cities will fill with dozens of book lovers at the night of the 20th of September. Everything because of Europe’s very first Indie Bookstores’ Night. Promoting small bookstores and encouraging interest in reading & literature among Poles are the main goals of the extraordinary event organized by OSDW Azymut, a Polish book distributor, celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year.

The one-of-its-kind idea engaged a number of local artists in tens of Polish cities, as well as the most famous writers, including Katarzyna Grochola, Szczepan Twardoch, Paweł Sołtys, Anna Kamińska, Ryszard Koziołek, Wojciech Chmielarz, Artur Górski, Lithuanian Kristina Sabaliauskaitė and many others.

Literary workshops, concerts, exhibitions, meetings...

Traditional meetings with authors are not the only kind of events which will entertain readers during this exceptional night. Those who prefer the thrills of Saturday nightlife can take part in the “silent disco”, where pounding party music will be being played alongside contemporary poetry till the early morning hours. The ones on the search for the time they’ve lost, may be able to find it during the 24-hour reading of Marcel Proust’s Opus Magnum. Mystery lovers will enjoy the unique opportunity to take part in guided walks and follow in the footsteps of their favourite authors and fictional characters. There will also be themed fairs, literary workshops, concerts, exhibitions, meetings with scientists and many other attractions, including those designed for and dedicated to kids.

Polish Indie Bookstores' Night

From old bookstores with years of tradition & experience to boutique, private bookshops – what they all have in common is their independence. Thanks to the effort of their owners, now each book has been offered a chance to find its reader. Unfortunately, those smaller bookshops are nowadays endangered by larger competitors, like chain stores and online bookstores. OSWD Azymut has set out on a rescue mission to save and promote them among readers.

Just before its premiere, Polish Indie Bookstores’ Night has already been announced an annual tradition and is hoped to inspire other European and non-European countries.
